STONE · SPEAKER · A4

The work began with a moment when I saw a stone being turned into a sound installation. A stone already possesses sonic properties of its own, while technological intervention can amplify, process, and reshape them. This made me think about the relationship between an object's physical properties, human intervention, the language used to name it, and the categories through which it is understood within contemporary art.

I collected and analysed the frequency of materials used in contemporary art since 1945, drawing on museum collection data from institutions including MoMA and Tate Modern, alongside research on material use in contemporary art.

From this research, I selected three recurring elements that were also part of my everyday surroundings: a stone, a speaker, and a sheet of A4 paper.

In the work, the stone is labelled Sound Installation, the speaker Sculpture, and the A4 paper Performance.
