The Blue Heartbeat originates from recordings made beneath the Blaues Wunder Bridge in Dresden.
The work consists of two sound layers. The first is the bridge's "heartbeat": low-frequency vibrations generated by vehicles crossing the bridge and recorded using a Geofón. The second is my own heartbeat, recorded in real time while listening to the first.
The relationship between these two recordings draws upon the idea of micropolyphony — not as a compositional technique, but as a way of understanding relationships. Through prolonged listening, my heartbeat undergoes minute physiological fluctuations in response to the bridge's rhythm. These almost imperceptible fluctuations constitute the fundamental material of the work.
