About
Bonsai Peng is a Chinese artist based in Dresden, Germany. Her practice grew out of a simple question: could sound still be composed without sound itself?
Trained in composition and sound art, she treats images, objects, text, film, and space as materials for organising time. Rather than treating sound as a medium, she understands it as a way of thinking.
Over time, this compositional approach has extended beyond sound into photography, film, sculpture, installation, and performance. For Peng, these are not separate disciplines but different routes toward the same inquiry. Increasingly, her work begins in ordinary, everyday situations and develops across different media.
She is also drawn to questions of authorship — experimenting with ways to shift creative agency toward her audience, the people she films, or the surrounding environment itself, and observing what unfolds when a work is no longer entirely her own to determine.
Born in Zigong, China. She lives and works in Dresden, Germany.
